Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, Shottery, near Stratford-upon-Avon. Photo May 2015.
Since we’re in the grasp of an even-more-atrocious-than-normal Texas summer and all of our lawns are brown and crunchy, I needed to see some green! This shot of the cottage is a really hard one to get without a lot of tourists in the way, so here’s where I’ll confess to Photoshopping a couple of people out of it. Content-aware-fill FTW!

Window at Framlingham Castle. Photo May 2015.
Even though I just used a Framlingham Castle photo in early June, I had to use one this week since it’s the anniversary of Mary I asserting her claim to the throne and ending Jane Grey’s 9-day reign. I think there is some debate about the effectiveness of the castle’s defenses (at least by the mid-16th century), but this narrow, deep-set window shows that it seems to have some defensive strengths.

As promised back in Picture of the Week #634, here’s a close-up of the plasterwork in the dining room of Harvard House.

Pond gardens at Hampton Court Palace. Photo May 2015.
This is the other garden next to the Pond Garden I posted in Picture of the Week #439 and looking back towards the Palace so you can see Mary II’s Orangery. These sunken areas were fish ponds in Tudor times and then were drained and made into gardens under William & Mary.

Garden center at Castle Acre Priory, Norfolk. Photo May 2015.
This is another view of the garden that I showed in Picture of the Week #608. I said then that if I had a house with a yard, I would do something like that and… well… I’m about to move back into a house with a yard. I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to started until next fall/winter (summer is too hot in Texas for a lot of landscaping!) but I’m definitely planning to get some gardens going!
