Picture of the Week #230

Backgammon board recovered from the Mary Rose. Photo June 2000.

Another photo from the old museum, in honor of the new museum opening to the public this Friday! Unfortunately it will probably be a few years before I get to visit in person, but oddly enough last night I had a dream about touring it. Just goes to show where I really want to be right now. 🙂

  1. There’s an entertaining article in the U.K.’s Daily Mail, with reconstructions of the heads of the stalwart seamen, all beefy “Heart of England” types who are rather neatly and suspiciously identified as “Gunner,” “Cook,” “Pilot,” etc. (did the remains carry labels?).

  2. One of the exhibits in the new museum is that of the ships dog. 5 years ago on a visit to Portsmouth, I went to see the Mary Rose and an exhibition of articles found. We were told where the skeleton of the dog was found (it was really sad). When Mary Rose sank and it tilted over, the dog got trapped in a sliding door that slid shut and the animal could not escape.
Definatly want to return to see Mary Rose again and this time not through the misty haze of preservative.
