Sunday Short Takes

Here are a couple more articles on topics from last week that I didn’t see in time to post then!

* Elite archers who drowned aboard Henry VIII’s warship the Mary Rose identified from their RSI

* Richard III dig: Results expected in January

And the rest of the news that caught my eye last week:

* Thomas Cromwell: Brewer

  1. The video for Peterborough is tremendous! However, at the beginning, as the cathedral doors are opening, there is a pole. It really spoils the lines of the entryway. Is this ‘support’ a new thing, or is it original to the building?

  2. It’s called a ‘mullion’ – in this case, specifically for a door, although windows have them too. I think this one is original (or at least old), but I don’t know for sure. It’s hard to tell without seeing the whole door, which might have a shape like this: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wells_cathedral_west_main_door.jpg where the mullion makes sense in the over-all shape of the door.

    I’ll try to remember to look at it when I finally get there! 🙂

  3. Thanks, Lara!

    Another look was taken at the video, as well as the picture you provided, and the ‘pole’ is between the two doors. My first gander made me think the ‘pole’ was inside the church, totally free-standing. It being a ‘mullion’ totally makes sense now!
