Sunday short takes

This is the first time in a few weeks I’ve had a few stories stack up so I could do a “short takes”!

* First up, from Foose, a review from the Spectator of G.W. Bernard’s book “Anne Boleyn: Fatal Attractions” (which I posted about back in February)

* More excavations at the site of The Theatre in Shoreditch (previously mentioned here and here) are going on this summer, and you can follow along at the Museum of London’s “Working Life of the Museum” blog (here’s a Bookmark.

  1. I tried to read “Fatal Attractions” word for word, but found myself skimming pages instead.

Bernard had some good arguments, but all the way through I couldn’t help but feel this was just ‘spin’ to get his book about Anne Boleyn some air-time in competition with all the others out there.

The idea that it was Henry that was doing all the holding-back, and not Anne leading him on, was interesting. However, when it got to Anne and her ‘lovers’…that was a bit much to chew. Perhaps I’m too conditioned in the belief that Anne butted heads with Cromwell and that’s what caused her downfall.
