The Field of Cloth of Gold today

There is a post up at the British Library’s blog for the Henry VIII: Man & Monarch exhibition about the location for the famous Field of Cloth of Gold, including a photo of the current marker. Check it out!

  1. I still haven’t watched the programs, but maybe this weekend… at least the first one. That’s a great idea to look on Google Maps! I have been working on adding Google map stuff to the “Places” section on the site but I didn’t think about locating “events” – like battles, etc. Nifty!

  2. I’m not sure if they do “events” on google maps, but in the episode that shows the location, it appears to be in a town and in what looks like a vacant area. I need to go back, look again and get some screen caps and then look at Google maps to see if I can get some more detail. BTW, if it is indeed a vacant lot or area, I think they should call Time Team in immediately!

Also, I just got back from Jamestown. I was absolutely delirious over that. There are so few sites in the US that can be said to have a Tudor connection and this is certainly one of them! The archeology museum next to the original site is one of the best museums I’ve ever seen for presenting artifacts in their original context and connecting them to the overall story. I already want to go back there.

And when I got home, my catalog for the Henry VIII: Man and Monarch exhibit was waiting for me. I’m almost drooling over the thought of being able to go to see all of these items. And I’ll be there in about 6 weeks!

  3. I was planning to make my own “events” stuff for the site, but on a hunch I checked Google Earth (as opposed to Google Maps) and sure enough someone had added the Field marker as a Point of Interest. In fact, they appear to link to the same photos that were in the BL blog post. 🙂 It looks like it is mostly farmland, with a few small villages nearby.

I’ve GOT to get to Jamestown one of these days. I had hoped to get there in 2006 during my last visit to the east coast, but we weren’t able to squeeze it in.

  4. Oh, and the point the search gives is in the farm field, but the marker is actually along the road just to the south, according to the BL post.

  5. Lara, I think Starkey’s identification of the palace has it actually in the town of Guines, though I believe he was going to by the painting and the descriptions at the time. The sat/map he showed on the show looked to be a large empty field in a town. They really need to investigate this further though.
