New suggestion for what sank the Mary Rose

From The Telegraph:

For almost 500 years, the sinking of the Mary Rose has been blamed on poor seamanship and the fateful intervention of a freak gust of wind which combined to topple her over.

Now, academics believe the vessel, the pride of Henry VIII’s fleet, was actually sunk by a French warship

  1. Gosh! Having lived with the idea that this ship sank due to open cannon ports, to read it might have suffered war damage is startling, to say the least.

Would absolutely LOVE to see the 3-D enactment of the battle, if only to see the Mary Rose as ‘real’ as possible. She has been enjoyed at Portsmouth, but then that’s only part of her overall loveliness.

What do French sources say? I’d think if they had anything to do with her dipping below the waves there would be source upon source…especially as MR was a favorite of Henry VIII’s.

  2. You know, that’s a good question Tracey… I’m not sure I’ve ever heard about the French version of events. I’ll have to search the info at the Mary Rose site one of these days. Last time I looked they had some pretty detailed history in some sections of their website so they may mention any French sources.

  3. The French have always claimed they sank her.

Does anybody have any information on the Mary Rose show mentioned in the article that is supposed to be on the History Channel on November 24? I checked the Nov. 24 schedule for both the History Channel and the History International Channel and it’s not listed there. Very annoying.

  4. I think it is just going to be on the UK History Channel, to start at least. Hopefully it will show up on the US channel of Hist-Int.

    Here’s their page on it:

  5. Well, darn! It’s for situations like this I taught myself all about bitTorrents. I’ll start searching for the program online the day after it shows in the UK. I can’t stand having to wait for programs like this. My best bitTorrent finds so far have been Time Team shows, one where they excavated at the site of Richmond Palace and found the exact location of the royal rooms, and one where they excavated the jousting yards at Greenwich.

  6. Oooo, good thought. I had weaned myself off BitTorrent while I had the satellite internet at home (and I didn’t want to do it at work), but now I”m back on a high speed connection at home. A friend has been giving me new Top Gear eps, but I hadn’t thought about looking for Time Team. I used to catch it on History International, but now it seems to have dropped off their schedule.

  7. I’m extremely annoyed with HI for dropping it — which they did several years ago — apparently to make room for that idiot program, The Naked Archeologist. Don’t get me started on that, but I’ve sent HI some very irritated emails about it.

If you are interested in those two TT episodes, email me at: lamaryrose@yahoo.co.uk and I will upload those two .avi episodes to my website for you to download so you don’t have to bother with the torrents (Time Team isn’t all that popular, so downloads of it can be tediously long).
