Picture of the Week #799

Wax figure of Henry VIII at the Bosworth Battlefield Museum. Photo May 2015.

Since I haven’t been to Ireland (YET – I hope to change that in the next 5-ish years), I didn’t have much that was appropriate for St. Patrick’s Day, so here’s a waxwork Henry VIII in a jaunty green hunting outfit. Henry VIII decided to upgrade himself from “Lord of Ireland” to “King of Ireland” in 1542, so I guess there is still a connection to Ireland for today’s photo.

Ruins of the Abbey of Bury St Edmunds. Photo May 2015.

As I’ve mentioned before, the Abbey of Bury St Edmunds was the original burial place of Mary Tudor, Queen of France and Duchess of Suffolk. The ruins are now a lovely garden park near the later St Edmundsbury Cathedral.

The Falcon Inn, Stratford upon Avon. Photo May 2015.

Some parts of The Falcon (now partially renamed after it became part of a hotel chain) date back to the early 16th century and it has been an inn since at least the mid-17th century. Definitely on my bucket list to stay there in the Tudor section!

The First Folio at the Harry Ransom Center, The University of Texas at Austin. Photo April 2016.

This is one of three copies at the Harry Ransom Center on the UT Austin campus, all of which were on display at the Shakespeare in Print and Performance exhibition to mark 400 years since the Bard’s death. They are currently on display again for the current exhibition The Long Lives of Very Old Books, which, in part, celebrates the 400th anniversary of the printing of the First Folio, which was entered into the Stationer’s Register in London on November 8, 1623.
