2008 Ghost Story contest winners!

The winner and an honorable mention for this year’s ghost story contest have been selected!

Here’s the report from the judge, Sandra Worth:

So nice to see so much talent! The stories were an amazingly good crop of entries and it was difficult to choose from amongst them, especially for Honorable Mention. I feel they were so good, they all deserved that. The winner of the contest wrote a story that was gripping the first time I read it, and also when I re-read it and knew what to expect. The winner also displayed a flawless grasp of fundamentals such as dialogue, structure, word choices, characters, point of view, all of which were expertly handled in a complex and tense story of time travel.

The winner is Innocent Ghost

I have also chosen Why, This is Hell for Honorable Mention.

You can read the stories at the links above on Wendy’s site or here on this site:

Innocent Ghost by Madeline Martin

Why, This is Hell by Kathy Marcella

Congrats to the winners and thanks to Wendy for organizing the contest and to Sandra for judging!

Rick Wakeman to perform at Hampton Court next May

From Historic Royal Palaces:

In 1972, Rick Wakeman, the keyboard player with the supergroup Yes, released one of the most iconic albums of all time, The Six Wives of Henry VIII.

The album was a massive success all over the world and to date has sold more than 15,000,000 copies on both vinyl and CD.

Amazingly, the music has never been performed in its entirety but all that is about to change. On 1 and 2 May, The Six Wives of Henry VIII will be performed in spectacular style on Hampton Court Palace’s West Front, to a limited audience of 5000 for each performance.

You can find out more about the event here

And just for the heck of it, here are Amazon links to the CDs:

Independent film on Mary Tudor

It’s so strange… I could have sworn that I posted this to the blog, but a search of the archives shows that I didn’t. I *did* post it over on the Movies and TV page, but not here. I remember a discussion of it, but it must have been on TudorTalk. Oh well, here it is now, if a bit late. 🙂

The Twisted Tale of Bloody Mary

Check out the site for a trailer, more about the film and ordering information.

(Thanks to Marty for the reminder!)

The Forty-Year-Old Virgin Queen

Regular readers will know that I get a kick out of Tudor/Elizabethan references in popular culture, so I thought this little bit of “The Starter Wife” where Debra Messing imagines herself as Elizabeth I was cute. You can see the clip here or by clicking on the screen capture above.

Tip of the red-colored wig to Sonja Marie for the link!

iTunesU

With the news that Cambridge and Oxford have joined in, I thought it was time to bring attention to iTunesU for anyone who hasn’t heard of it before now. Basically, colleges and universities have started joining in with Apple to podcast audio and video of lectures, as well as information about their schools for potential students, etc. Some universities have been doing things like this through their own websites, but having them all under one umbrella at iTunes is pretty useful.

I haven’t had a chance to check for any Tudor history specific lectures yet, so if anyone finds some please post them in the comments. I downloaded the 50 minute “Monarchy” lecture by David Starkey (over 400MB!) from Cambridge but I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet.

David Starkey’s new program on Henry VIII coming next year

From Broadcastnow.co.uk:

David Starkey is to produce a four-part “psychological profile” of Henry VIII for Channel 4.

The as-yet-untitled series will go beyond the facts of Henry’s six wives and his split with the Catholic church to piece together a sense of his character and motivations.

The first 60-minute episode will show Henry as a highly intelligent child, while subsequent episodes will paint him as a brilliant “A-list celebrity” character with an over-developed ego and “solipsistic sense of self”.

Singer Joss Stone to play Anne of Cleves in “The Tudors”

I’m guessing that no matter how inaccurate the history in the series is, we won’t be seeing Anne of Cleves doing a soul or R&B number.

From the BBC:

Singer Joss Stone is to play Anne of Cleves in the third season of The Tudors, the BBC has confirmed.

It will be the first TV acting role for the 22-year-old, who made her debut in fantasy film Eragon in 2006.

The third series of the Tudors will follow the King as he weds third Queen Jane Seymour, played by Anita Briem, and then Anne of Cleves.

A daughter of a German nobleman, Anne was betrothed to Henry in a marriage treaty after the King was shown a portrait of her.

How long will “The Tudors” go?

It looks like Showtime’s execs are planning to take it through to wives 5 and 6 in a fourth season, but it doesn’t sound like there are plans to go to the other monarchs. Too bad… they could have some fun in Edward VI’s and Mary I’s reigns, especially since those haven’t gotten a lot of play of late with Elizabeth getting most of the screen time. Although the Lady Jane Grey storyline would have to come from somewhere inventive since the Mary/Margaret story got changed so much in the first season.
