Since someone asked about this a while back, I thought I would post an update now that it is available. And Season 1 and Season 2 are available in both HD (and standard definition) for any of you who got fancy new TVs or computer monitors for Christmas.

2008 Ghost Story contest winners!
The winner and an honorable mention for this year’s ghost story contest have been selected!
Here’s the report from the judge, Sandra Worth:
So nice to see so much talent! The stories were an amazingly good crop of entries and it was difficult to choose from amongst them, especially for Honorable Mention. I feel they were so good, they all deserved that. The winner of the contest wrote a story that was gripping the first time I read it, and also when I re-read it and knew what to expect. The winner also displayed a flawless grasp of fundamentals such as dialogue, structure, word choices, characters, point of view, all of which were expertly handled in a complex and tense story of time travel.
The winner is Innocent Ghost
I have also chosen Why, This is Hell for Honorable Mention.
You can read the stories at the links above on Wendy’s site or here on this site:
Innocent Ghost by Madeline Martin
Why, This is Hell by Kathy Marcella
Congrats to the winners and thanks to Wendy for organizing the contest and to Sandra for judging!
Rick Wakeman to perform at Hampton Court next May
From Historic Royal Palaces:
In 1972, Rick Wakeman, the keyboard player with the supergroup Yes, released one of the most iconic albums of all time, The Six Wives of Henry VIII.
The album was a massive success all over the world and to date has sold more than 15,000,000 copies on both vinyl and CD.
Amazingly, the music has never been performed in its entirety but all that is about to change. On 1 and 2 May, The Six Wives of Henry VIII will be performed in spectacular style on Hampton Court Palace’s West Front, to a limited audience of 5000 for each performance.
You can find out more about the event here
And just for the heck of it, here are Amazon links to the CDs:
Independent film on Mary Tudor
It’s so strange… I could have sworn that I posted this to the blog, but a search of the archives shows that I didn’t. I *did* post it over on the Movies and TV page, but not here. I remember a discussion of it, but it must have been on TudorTalk. Oh well, here it is now, if a bit late. 🙂
The Twisted Tale of Bloody Mary
Check out the site for a trailer, more about the film and ordering information.
(Thanks to Marty for the reminder!)
US DVD of “The Tudors” season 2 delayed
It’s only by a week, but I wanted to update the info. The new release date is January 6, 2009. The DVD set was released back in October in the UK.
Amazon links (US on left, UK on right):
Round-up of several news items
These should probably each get a post of their own, but I’m being lazy…
First, from The Independent:
The way we used to eat: The Tudor kitchen
They didn’t have tomatoes, potatoes
Follow-up to fashion article from February
The “Tudor portraits on your knickers” that I mentioned back in February, are now available for purchase.
Twisted Twee is now selling the pants it designed for Betty Jackson direct to retailers. The pants, which feature the faces of historical figures such as Henry VIII, first appeared on the runway at Jackson
The Forty-Year-Old Virgin Queen

Regular readers will know that I get a kick out of Tudor/Elizabethan references in popular culture, so I thought this little bit of “The Starter Wife” where Debra Messing imagines herself as Elizabeth I was cute. You can see the clip here or by clicking on the screen capture above.
Tip of the red-colored wig to Sonja Marie for the link!
(original link no longer works and was removed because it was bringing in a lot of spam)
New CD and concert from Westminster Abbey Choir
The Westminster Abbey choir will be performing a concert on Nov. 20 to mark the 450th anniversary of Mary I’s death and Elizabeth I’s accession to the throne, and will be releasing a CD of period music. More details here.
You can order the CD through Amazon US and UK here:
(Thanks to TudorRose for the info!)
iTunesU
With the news that Cambridge and Oxford have joined in, I thought it was time to bring attention to iTunesU for anyone who hasn’t heard of it before now. Basically, colleges and universities have started joining in with Apple to podcast audio and video of lectures, as well as information about their schools for potential students, etc. Some universities have been doing things like this through their own websites, but having them all under one umbrella at iTunes is pretty useful.
I haven’t had a chance to check for any Tudor history specific lectures yet, so if anyone finds some please post them in the comments. I downloaded the 50 minute “Monarchy” lecture by David Starkey (over 400MB!) from Cambridge but I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet.
More Tudor inspiration on the catwalk

Actually more Elizabethan this time, I guess.
From ElleUK:
From the opening outfit, which paid homage to Elizabethan dress, featuring a latex ruff collar atop a dress with latex ruffled underskirts
David Starkey’s new program on Henry VIII coming next year
From Broadcastnow.co.uk:
David Starkey is to produce a four-part “psychological profile” of Henry VIII for Channel 4.
The as-yet-untitled series will go beyond the facts of Henry’s six wives and his split with the Catholic church to piece together a sense of his character and motivations.
The first 60-minute episode will show Henry as a highly intelligent child, while subsequent episodes will paint him as a brilliant “A-list celebrity” character with an over-developed ego and “solipsistic sense of self”.
No fat Henry in “The Tudors” seasons 3 and 4
Oh well, there goes my theory that they were leading up to a fat Henry VIII with that final scene of him tearing into a bunch of food at the end of season 2…
I’ve seen this bit of news come through in a bunch of places, so here is just one of the many links to the story.
The Tudors Season 2 US release date
The second season of “The Tudors” will be out on DVD in the US on December 30. Not quite in time for Christmas, but close enough.
Here’s the US Amazon pre-order link. Amazon UK info is down a few posts.
UK release date for Season 2 of “The Tudors” DVD
No official announcement on the US release yet, but I’ll post it when I hear something. The release date for the UK discs is October 13, 2008. (Pre-order link at Amazon UK)
Singer Joss Stone to play Anne of Cleves in “The Tudors”
I’m guessing that no matter how inaccurate the history in the series is, we won’t be seeing Anne of Cleves doing a soul or R&B number.
From the BBC:
Singer Joss Stone is to play Anne of Cleves in the third season of The Tudors, the BBC has confirmed.
It will be the first TV acting role for the 22-year-old, who made her debut in fantasy film Eragon in 2006.
…
The third series of the Tudors will follow the King as he weds third Queen Jane Seymour, played by Anita Briem, and then Anne of Cleves.A daughter of a German nobleman, Anne was betrothed to Henry in a marriage treaty after the King was shown a portrait of her.
Knitted Anne Boleyn with detachable head
Found via Permanent Record
Check out this knitted Anne Boleyn with a detachable head. She’s planning on doing more and releasing the basic pattern. It’s probably a good thing I don’t knit since I’m already working on the Six Wives in cross stitch and have plans for a Six Wives quilt!
Jabba VIII
Or should that be Henry the Hut?
Worth1000.com had a Star Wars art photoshop contest and the entry above caught my eye. 🙂
How long will “The Tudors” go?
It looks like Showtime’s execs are planning to take it through to wives 5 and 6 in a fourth season, but it doesn’t sound like there are plans to go to the other monarchs. Too bad… they could have some fun in Edward VI’s and Mary I’s reigns, especially since those haven’t gotten a lot of play of late with Elizabeth getting most of the screen time. Although the Lady Jane Grey storyline would have to come from somewhere inventive since the Mary/Margaret story got changed so much in the first season.
Emmy nominations announced
“The Tudors” picked up two nominations this time, for Best Casting and Best Costumes for a series. I’m kind of surprised that they didn’t get a few more since I thought the second season (in particular the finale) was stronger than the first. Oh well!
Here’s the full list from The Emmys
