Sunday Short Takes

* I meant to post this a few weeks ago – The November issue of BBC History Magazine has a cover article titled The Secret War Against the Tudors about the various plots against Henry VII and Henry VIII

* And because I thought it was really interesting – Heavenly illumination: The science and magic of stained glass (from The Guardian’s science blog)

* Was Henry Vlll’s first wife anorexic? Catherine of Aragon’s secret problem (I have no idea why they have a portrait of Charles V labeled as Prince Arthur)

The author of the above article also has a new book on Catherine (as far as I know, the first dedicated biography of Catherine since Garrett Mattingly’s) which just came out in the UK and will be out in a few weeks in the US. Usual Amazon links below:

  1. How could she be anorexic? She was quite chunky in her later years, after all those years of childbearing. He must mean when she was much younger.

  2. LOL that is DEFINITELY not Arthur!!! How embarrassing for Mr. Tremlett.

  3. In all fairness to the author, on the portrait mislabeling, he probably had no control over it. It’s kind of sad that no one caught the error before it was posted… you would think anyone even vaguely familiar with Tudor history would know that wasn’t Arthur (and with that jaw, would have to be a member of the Hapsburg family!).

  4. Interesting article Lara. Thanks for posting. I never made the connection between her fertility problems and an eating disorder.

It obviously didn’t affect her ability to conceive but if she did extreme fasting during her pregnancy then I wonder how much that would have hurt her pregnancy? Any medical professionals know? It seems they keep lowering the amount of weight you are supposed to gain (some doctors are saying 10-15 pounds now!)…which really isn’t that much weight gain. I can gain 10 pounds without even trying 🙂
