Eric Ives new book on Jane Grey now out in US

Okay, it was actually several weeks ago, but most of October was a blur for me…

The publisher, Wiley-Blackwell, has more information and some excerpts up on their web page for the book.

And here are the Amazon links again, now with the US one. And again, thanks to everyone who purchases through my affiliate links. I appreciate it!

  1. I actually bought this book a few weeks ago and just started reading it yesterday. I’m only two or three chapters in, but I really like it so far. The book looks and feels like an academic source that you’d find in your university library (not like the popular histories), but I love the author’s points and writing style so far.

So many books go through the motions of “Jane was born in 1537 and was a very smart girl… blah blah blah” that everyone already knows, but Ives jumps right in to the succession crisis from the start! He makes the point of his book clear, and that is to closely scrutinize the events and behaviors of all the key players. He also talks readers through his thought process, which is really cool. It’s like we’re a part of the “detective” team trying to get down to the bottom of the story.

    So far I recommend it!!

  2. Good to hear! I requested a review copy, so I hope I can start on it soon. I’m about halfway through “Wolf Hall” (which I’m really liking) so it might be a little while until I get to it though!

  3. I’ve seen this book and “The Three Sisters Who Would be Queen” in the bookstore.

What is the difference between the two? Which historian gives a more well-rounded vision of Jane and her family?

Don’t want to read one after the other and find that information has been repeated.

  4. “Sisters” goes beyond Jane’s story and talks about Catherine and Mary all the way in to Elizabeth’s reign and I think Ives book just focuses mostly on Jane and the plot around her. I’m not sure how much overlap there is but I would imagine there is some.
