Servants were a highly heterogeneous body of people, male and female, young and old, bound together by their relationship (temporary or permanent) of dependence upon a master or mistress. A servant was not by contemporary definition someone who scrubbed and cleaned within a domestic setting. At all but the lowest social levels, however, servants were used to substitute for or supplement child labour.
