Clerical rector was parochial clergyman who held all the tithes, great and small, of his benefice. In some benefices, however, the great tithes were held by one or more lay persons (known as impropriatorjs) and only the small tithes by a clerical vicar. Also used to describe heads of Jesuit houses and some university of ficials.
