Miniature painting. In the 1520s Henry VIII initiated the practice of commissioning miniature portraits of members of the royal family and, later, of prospective members. In the 1570s, however, the business was opened up and nobles, gentry and merchants commissioned miniatures from Nicholas Hilliard. Miniatures were used as 'tokens' to underline family and/or patronage relations.
