A forty day period of fast preceding Easter and beginning with a communal act of penance on Ash Wednesday. One meal a day, which might include fish but not meat, and a light collation at night were allowed. The observance of Lent was ordered in the Book of Common Prayer. The behaviour of the people during Lent continued to be regulated by the secular as well as the religious authorities.
