Greenwich was an important palace in Tudor history. It had been a royal residence since the 14th century, and was enlarged and remodeled by Edward IV, and further still by Henry VII and Henry VIII. Henry VIII was born at the palace, as were his daughters Mary and Elizabeth. It was also the site of the young King Edward VI's premature death.
The Tudor palace of Greenwich was demolished in the 17th century and the Old Royal Navy College now stands on the site. There are remains of the cellars of the old palace under the Queen Anne Block of the College.
The nearby Queen's House (part of the National Maritime Museum) was commissioned by Anne of Denmark, wife of James I. The Queen's House now houses the Museum's collection of fine art which includes several Tudor-related paintings.
