Sometimes used simply to mean those living off the land. In this sense England was clearly a peasant society in the sixteenth century. A more precise definition is sometimes implied: that the family farm, owned or leased by the family and not by individuals, is the core of the economy, which is characterised by domestic subsistence production and relatively unaffected by market forces.
