{"id":1236,"date":"2009-03-09T08:55:34","date_gmt":"2009-03-09T14:55:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tudorhistory.org\/blog\/?p=1236"},"modified":"2009-03-09T08:55:34","modified_gmt":"2009-03-09T14:55:34","slug":"more-on-shakespeares-first-theater","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tudorhistory.org\/blog\/2009\/03\/09\/more-on-shakespeares-first-theater\/","title":{"rendered":"More on Shakespeare&#8217;s &#8216;First Theater&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is an update to a story that I <a href=\"http:\/\/tudorhistory.org\/blog\/2008\/08\/06\/shakespeares-first-theater-found\/\">blogged about last summer<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>From the BBC:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nA team from the Museum of London found the remains of what they believe is also Britain&#8217;s first purpose built theatre in Shoreditch last summer.<\/p>\n<p>Built in 1576, it is thought the Bard acted there and that it also hosted the premiere of Romeo and Juliet.<\/p>\n<p>The site is now owned by the Tower Theatre Company and a new playhouse is due to open there in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Taryn Nixon, from the Museum of London, said her team had found part of the original curved wall of the playhouse, which was believed to be polygonal in shape.<\/p>\n<p>A metre and a half below street level, it has also uncovered the gravel surface, gently sloping down towards the stage, where the bulk of the audience would have stood.<\/p>\n<p>But the archaeologists fear the stage itself may be buried underneath a housing development.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/uk_news\/7931823.stm\" target=\"new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Full article<\/a> (with a short video that has a nice overview of the site)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is an update to a story that I blogged about last summer: From the BBC: A team from the Museum of London found the remains of what they believe is also Britain&#8217;s first purpose built theatre in Shoreditch last summer.
