Question from Sara - Portrait of Catherine Carey

I was wondering if there are any portraits of Catherine Carey, Elizabeth I's cousin. I can't find any online. Thanks.

Hi!

There is a portrait which may be of Catherine Carey by the painter Steven van der Meulen, c.1562 (I think the identity of the sitter is still up for debate?). According to an article by Sally Varlow entitled ‘Sir Francis Knollys’s Latin dictionary: new evidence for Katherine Carey’, the painting was one of several Knollys family portraits that were sold at Sotheby’s in 1974 and the portrait is now part of the Mellon Collection held by the Yale Centre for British Art, New Haven, Conn., U.S.A. I’ve looked online but cannot find an image of the portrait which is a shame as it would be interesting to see!

By the way, there was another Catherine Carey who was countess of Nottingham and her portrait is available to see online. However this is not the Catherine Carey who was Mary Boleyn's daughter (the countess of Nottingham was the daughter of Henry Carey and therefore Mary Boleyn's granddaughter).

Hope that helps!
